Access Statement for Rossie Estate

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the threat to our plants, trees and woodlands, The Department of Agriculture has asked us to use Foot Mats to contain the likes of ell worm and Phytophthora ramorum. This is placed at the entrance to the garden and we would ask you to walk both feet through it, as it contains diluted Virkon to help stop the cross contamination from garden to garden. Thank you for your understanding. 


The Ladybank mainline railway station is approximately 5.2 miles (69 minute walk) or approximately 10 minutes by car. There is a local taxi service and also an accessible a bus service 94A.
There is limited mobile phone reception in the area.

From the South and Edinburgh Airport heading North across the Forth Road Bridge:

• From Edinburgh take the M90 and turn off at Junction 8 to St Andrews signed to the A91, go through Gateside and Auchtermuchty.
• On leaving the village Rossie’s woodland can be seen in the distance to the right hand side.
• Proceed for approximately 1 1/4 miles, there is a right hand turn signed to Charlottetown 1 ½ miles. Take this right turn.
• Carry on down this road for approximately 1/4 mile and at first right, turn right into estate middle drive, cobbled edges and an avenue of lime trees.
• Follow this track and take first turning left into car park, park and walk to the garden entrance and café.

From the North and Dundee Airport:

• Follow signs for the A92 to Kirkcaldy and the Tay Bridge.
• Cross the Tay Bridge go across three roundabouts remaining on the A92.
• Continue on the A92 for approximately 20 minutes until the Melville Lodges roundabout. Turn right onto the A91 following signs for Auchtermuchty / M90 and Kincardine Bridge.
• Continue down this road, under a bridge, ignoring the signs to Newburgh on the right and Charlottetown to the left, continue along the A91 and take the road signed to Charlottetown 1½ miles sign on the right hand side, road on the left, take this left hand turn to Charlottetown.
• Carry on down this road for approximately 1/4 mile and at first right, turn right into estate middle drive, cobbled edges and an avenue of lime trees.
• Follow this track and take first turning left into car park, park and walk to the garden entrance and café.

Car Parking Facilities: There is a gravel car park for your use free of charge and two disabled car spaces.

Garden – Backhouse Cafe & ticket office is open: 1st Wednesday in April to last Sunday in September – 10am to 4pm – we are CLOSED on a MONDAY & TUESDAY, last entry & last orders at the Cafe is 3.30pm.

Toilets: Accessible toilets are situated in the Backhouse Heritage & Education Centre to the right of the car park.

Surfaces: The surface on the approach to the cafe is a combination of gravel, slope and paving stone (please note the slope down to the garden is more than 1:12 at the doors). The cafe eating area is all on the same level, has 10 indoor tables which are 73 cm high with a centre pedestal. Outside on the café patio there are 3 benches which can hold 6 each, 2×2 seater tables and a central table and chairs for 2, 3, 4 or 5.

Grounds and Gardens: Rossie Estate has paths, which are either grass, gravel or whin pathways. If you have mobility problems or are a wheelchair user you will be able to access much of the garden but please be wary of straying off the main hardcore pathways.

Please take care as the wild nature of the site many more minor paths are rough, uneven and steep in places and can be boggy after wet weather. However, if you are fit and steady on your legs we hope you will be able to explore gardens.

There are various seating areas, with wooden seats situated throughout the gardens.

Assistance Dogs: are very welcome onsite, as with other dogs they must be kept on a lead and cleaned up after and taken home. All other dogs are not permitted in the gardens but are permitted in the Tomb Walk and on the cafe outside patio, if well behaved.

Smoking Onsite: All indoor areas are no smoking, but a smoking bench is provided outside the café.
